In aerobic fermentations, dissolved oxygen (DO) is an important and often limiting substrate. The specific growth rate is directly affected by DO concentration when oxygen is the rate-limiting factor. This level of DO below which the oxygen is limited in the culture is called “critical oxygen concentration”. Oxygen is usually introduced to fermentation broth by air spargers which could have a big impact on bioreactor design.
Intended Learning Outcomes
After doing the virtual lab on this website, students are supposed to be able to:
Understand the principles of oxygen transfer and oxygen uptake;
Determine oxygen transfer rate by dynamic method;
Compute volumetric transfer coefficient.
