The mechanical property of the biological and engineering materials is measured by using a Tensile Testing Machine (TTM). During the testing, a specimen attached to the TTM and elongated. The corresponding forces exerted on the specimen are recorded in real time. At the end of the test, the force-elongation diagram is obtained. The tensile elastic modulus of the specimen is then calculated based on the force-elongation data.
Intended Learning Outcomes
After doing the virtual lab on this website, students are expected to be able to:
Understand how to measure the mechanical property of the materials by using the Tensile Testing Machine
Calculate the tensile elastic modulus of a material from the force-elongation data
Compare the tensile elastic moduli of different materials with various dimensions
